Nicola Willits

Math Tutor

I love working with students who struggle in math and also with students for whom math comes easily. I started as a high school math teacher and have taught calculus for many years. Over time, I grew curious about how students learn basic concepts in math and how I could help students who struggle. So I started taking classes on a multisensory program for cognitive development in mathematics called Making Math Real. This program gave me the expertise to help students develop cognitive tools in basic mathematics, preparing them for success in problem solving-based curriculums. It also provided me with the means to remediate any gaps preventing students from achieving success in their current math class.

For over a decade I have tutored students from ages 5 to 55. I have helped younger students master basic concepts such as place value and equivalent fractions. I've also prepared older students for classes such as Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2, and Calculus and have supported them in those classes.

I'm a Palo Alto native and a Gunn High School alum. During high school, I started teaching music to younger students and found my passion for teaching. I also have a deep love for math and its applications. After graduating from Yale University with a BS in Engineering and Applied Sciences, I worked as a research engineer and in a few startups. Now, I combine my passions to help students succeed in a subject I truly enjoy.

When not teaching math, I enjoy spending time with my large, extended family. I also like gardening and doting on my two hypoallergenic Goldendoodles.

Whether you need help with fractions or want to master calculus, I would love to work with you!
